Privacy of and Access to University Public Records
The California
Public Records Act declares that access to
information concerning the conduct of the people's business is a fundamental and necessary right of
every person in the State, that public records are open to inspection at all times during
regular office hours, and are subject to inspection and copying by every person except as
provided in the Act. |
The University of California
classifies University records in three categories
NONPERSONAL:
Unlimited access releasable upon request:
Name, campus address and telephone number, title, rate of pay, job description and date of
hire.
PERSONAL:
Unlimited access by individual, limited
access by others: Home address and telephone number.
Releasable upon request: Name, campus address and
telephone number, title, rate of pay, job description and date of
hire.
Non-Disclosable except as provided by law: Birth date, marital status, citizenship, social security number, prior non -University
employers, relatives' names and personal data, etc. Attendance records, income tax
withholding information, performance evaluations.
CONFIDENTIAL:
Non-Disclosable except as provided by
law: Criminal law enforcement records. Investigative materials relating to
a specific violation of law. Medical, psychiatric, or psychological material where
such release would be detrimental to the individual's health (To be determined by
medical/psychiatric consultation). Written testing or examination materials and scoring
keys. Academic personnel letters of recommendation.
